WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?

The cause of hair loss is due to a variety of reasons. The most common are aging, change in hormone levels and hereditary baldness. Usually, the earlier this occurs, the more drastic the baldness will become over time. This can cause those impacted with a loss of confidence, overwhelming anxiety and general insecurity. Luckily, there is a solution.

DO I QUALIFY FOR A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

In order to qualify for surgical restoration, you must have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head. These areas serve as ‘donor areas’.

A hair transplant can be carried out in the early stages of hair loss, when the hair is just starting to thin, or in the later stages when baldness is more apparent. Either way, it is essential that the hair loss pattern is established before surgery is undertaken.

HOW DO THE DOCTORS AT ULTIMATE HAIR DESIGN A NEW HAIRLINE?

Hairline design is a forward-looking process, taking into consideration not only the post-surgical outcome expected in one year, but also the expected rate of hair loss over the course of your life. There is a limited number of follicular units in the donor area, and the design must take the supply into account in order to create a natural-looking result that will last. If you are younger with excessive hair loss that is expected to advance, it will be difficult to achieve high density throughout the scalp. However, if you are older and present with less hair loss, your doctor will have more artistic freedom designing your new hairline.

HOW IS THE DONOR AREA PREPARED?

The Safe Donor Area (SDA), also known as the “lifetime” supply of hair, is a three-inch tall band of hair-rich scalp that wraps around the lower back of your head. From this supply, your doctor will excise a 1 cm x 22 cm section (which contains an average of 2,500 follicular units). Before the excision, the donor section hair will be shaved down to about 3 mm in length.

HOW IS THE DONOR HAIR HARVESTED?

The donor hair area will be numbed with local anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort when the doctor excises the strip. The incision will then be closed using traditional plastic surgery techniques to ensure you’ll leave the surgery with little to no indication of the procedure on the back of your head. The harvest process generally takes half an hour.

HOW ARE THE GRAFTS PREPARED?

Graft preparation is a meticulous and delicate process, as the hair-bearing tissue must be kept cool and hydrated during dissection. Under a microscope, the follicular unit grafts are slivered, crosscut and trimmed to produce individual cylinders of tissue containing between one and three hairs. On rare occasions, some cylinders might contain up to four hairs.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY?

After all the donor follicles are placed in your scalp, your doctor will dress both the recipient and donor sites with a loose-fitting bandage and a loose cap to cover the dressing on your scalp. Most patients leave pain free, but you can take over-the-counter pain medication to help with mild pain and discomfort.

The day after your surgery, you will return to your doctor for a post-operative check. The surgical dressing will be removed and the grafted and donor areas will be rinsed to remove any remaining residue from the surgery.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIMELINE?

For the first few days following the surgery, you might notice minimal scabbing at the graft site, and much of the transplanted hair will end up falling out. This is normal, and it allows new growth to occur. By the three-week mark, most of the scabs will have flaked off, any post-surgical redness will have faded, and the new hair follicles will start showing new growth.

Three to four months after surgery, you should notice significant hair growth and a decline in any lingering sensitivity to your scalp. At the six-month mark, about 60-70% of your grafted follicles will be actively growing, adding density to length.

By 18 months post-surgery, the transplanted follicles will have fully matured, and you’ll be able to have your hair cut and styled to your liking.
